It`s Social Security & Medicare...Not Broken...Hands off

Take From The Poor & Give to the Rich !

The Democrats on the so-called Super Committee took a disturbing step this week, when they made a major concession to Republicans – proposing $200 billion in cuts to Medicare.

And the Wall Street Journal reports that Democrats are also supporting changing the cost-of-living formula — cutting current and future Social Security benefits.

With private pensions of the 99% being ransacked by the 1%, the last thing we need to do now is weaken our pillars of retirement security. Sign the petition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Democratic Leader Pelosi: Don't let the Super Committee cut Social Security and Medicare.

We can stop the Super Committee.

Democrats on the committee are working in close consultation with their Senate and House leaders. If we let them know that the 99% believe Social Security and Medicare cuts are both cruel policy and suicidal politics, we can push them back from the brink.

We have repeatedly used our people power to stop Washington from slashing our retirement security. And we can do it again.

Sign the petition http://action.ourfuture.org/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=156 to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi: Don't let the Super Committee cut Social Security and Medicare. The only way a dirty deal to decimate Social Security and Medicare will happen is in the back room. It's up to us to force this issue into the sunshine. We know that if the public actually has the final word on how to cut our long-term deficit, the 1% would be comfortably paying their fair share instead of the 99% getting another kick in the teeth. We would be raising taxes on millionaires and taxing reckless Wall Street speculation, as well as getting rid of wasteful military spending that only fattens the wallets of private contractors. We don't need to gut Social Security and Medicare. And we need to tell Washington that we know we don't.

Sign the petition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi: Don't let the Super Committee cut Social Security and Medicare.

Social Security and Medicare are still with us because we've kept on fighting for them. Don't stop now.

Thanks for All That You do ,

Proposed Super Committee Cuts Poised to Weaken State and Local Economies.

As the “Super Committee” met on Wednesday, Alliance members and other local advocates from the Strengthen Social Security Campaign – a coalition which includes the Alliance – sprung into action. In states represented by the 12-member Committee, the activists released new reports detailing the projected fall-out resulting from the committee’s proposed cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Information on the new reports was discussed at press conferences throughout the nation and in Washington, D.C., where the Super Committee met publicly for the first time in a month. Activists showed that the secret Super Committee could make cuts to over $621 Billion in Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits in their states. In the eleven Super Committee states represented, 20.3 million Americans receive Social Security, 18.5 million Americans receive Medicare, and 21.4 million Americans receive Medicaid. Go to http://bit.ly/o7LNqS to view the reports. At a press conference in front of Rep. Jeb Hensarling’s office in Dallas on Thursday, the Texas Alliance unveiled a report, issued jointly with the Strengthen Social Security campaign, detailing the number of Texas Congressional District 5 residents who rely on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, as well as information on the economic impact and jobs the programs support in Texas. The report was then delivered to the office of Hensarling, who is co-chair of the Super Committee. Alliance members shared their personal stories with the press at similar events this week in Phoenix, Tucson and Scottsdale, Arizona; Columbus, Ohio; and York, Pennsylvania. In California, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina, Alliance members also shared their personal stories on tele-conference calls with reporters.

John Conyers Resolution Gains Attention as More Super Committee Plans Emerge

On Monday, the Strengthen Social Security Campaign sent a letter to House Members urging them to co-sponsor a resolution introduced by Rep. John Conyers (D-MI). The resolution expresses the sense of Congress that the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction should not propose any cuts in benefits to Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid. With respect to Social Security, “No Benefit Cuts” includes no increase in Social Security’s retirement age and no reduction in its cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) by adopting the “Chained CPI” (Consumer Price Index). The letter is at http://bit.ly/sPMFzD. To see how the Chained CPI would harm seniors, go to http://bit.ly/skmv0w. The effort may be coming just in time. According to The Washington Post, Democrats on the joint deficit reduction committee on Tuesday discussed “a plan that would pare the deficit by almost $3 trillion over 10 years through a roughly even mix of spending cuts and revenue increases.” The proposal, presented to the Super Committee by Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) linked additional discretionary appropriations cuts - including some from defense - with about $500 billion in savings from Medicare and Medicaid combined, according to aides familiar with the committee’s deliberations. The package includes cutting Medicare benefits for recipients and changing the Social Security COLA formula to the Chained CPI formula, which will reduce the COLA for beneficiaries immediately. Republicans had a counter proposal that also included the Chained CPI.

Medicare 2012 Part B Premium and Deductible Announced

On Thursday, HHS and CMS officials announced the 2012 Medicare Part B premium and deductible. Both went down from the 2011 levels. To read the HHS news release - which states that the standard Part B monthly premium for 2012 will be $99.90, only a $3.50 monthly increase for beneficiaries who had been paying $96.40 for the last two years - go to http://1.usa.gov/vDuvdF. The Part B annual deductible in 2012 will be $140, a decrease of $22. “The lower numbers are the result of the improvements made by the Affordable Care Act (You know, Obama Care), and I hope you will remind your friends of that fact,”

A Fight for America`s Wealth ! A Fight Against Greed !

Today`s News ~ Depressing !

By Don Jones = Underdog...10/27/11

I`m a news junkie. Today`s news is so sad/depressing. There is a war going on in our beloved America, for our money and minds. The Republican party wants all of the money to go to, our already wealthy and very rich. The Democrats want everything to be paid for by tax increases. Let me clear something up for everyone. The middle class has been paying most of the country`s debts for years. When "Dubya" Bush cut the tax for the ultra rich, someone had to take up the slack ! What we did was, start to borrow. Now we owe amounts I can`t even begin to write. Republicans say, the Ultra Rich need the tax breaks to invest in jobs ? If that is/was the case, why are we not just covered up in jobs now ? Democrats on the other hand keep spending the tax break money, that we no longer have. Whats up with that ? Republicans want to cut Social Security and Medicare. WHY ? Oh, I forgot, they have Republicans and Democrats alike, borrowed from our Social Security Trust fund. Excuse me, but Whats that all about ? If they borrow from US, the Social Security fund, does that translate to me borrowing from myself ? Do huge amounts of money corrupt ? Is it kinda like borrowing money from a 401-K and not paying it back ? Have we all gone NUTS ? No. Just very GREEDY ! Are politicians, almost all of them taking caring of me ? Or, perhaps it is the politician, they are taking care of. We have, Occupy Wall-Street and now all over the country, protests to stop the GREED ! Last night on the news, Some of our cities`s looked like third world countries`s. Police beating up our fellow citizens for a peaceful protest. Beware when our good guys/gals go bad. If we keep on this path, I truly believe a true revolution could and will occur. I truly believe in our Country and our Constitution and Bill of Rights ! Not just for a few but for all of our Citizens. You may not agree with what I write or say, but, you must say, that I have the right to say/write it ! As I do you. No jobs = Less Tax`s. No Healthcare = The Poor ! More Wars = the Poor ! No Unions= The Poor ! No Middle Class = No America ! I could go on, but, I think you get the picture ? ! I do not pretend to have all of the answers, although I do have some. One last comment, Have you noticed the caliber of Men and Women our Presidential race is attracting ? Not too GOOD ! You Bet`Cha ! Our race to the bottom is almost complete.

Supercommittee on Social Security...Need to Hear from YOU !

Strengthen Social Security...Don`t Cut It !

http://www.progressivesunited.org/action/super-committee-strengthen-soc-sec?sc=ctsc_strengthen_em

The Supercommittee is having their first public meeting in months, and we need to make sure they hear from us.

Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are on the Supercommittee’s chopping block. It’s up to us to get them off the table. Each of these vital programs provides income security or health care to more than 1 out of 6 Massachusetts residents.
We need the Supercommittee to hear from you, they are accepting public comments right now and we need to overwhelm them with the voices of average Americans across the country. That's why we have partnered with Progressives United to to call on people across the country to write into the Super Committee and tell them Hands Off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Make you voice heard and submit your comments directly the super committee -- tell them Hands Off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.

Social Security does not add a penny to the deficit it should not even be under discussion. The average income of Medicare beneficiaries is about $22,000 a year; today’s Medicare beneficiaries cannot afford to have their benefits cut; today’s hard working Americans cannot afford to have their eligibility for Medicare benefits raised by two years, from 65 to 67. And as more and more people lose employer-provided health insurance, the last thing the nation’s seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income children who depend on Medicaid need is for the federal government to slash the program. Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid did not cause the run-up in federal deficits. So politicians in Washington shouldn’t come calling on us to clean up the mess. Make you voice heard and submit your comments directly the super committee -- tell them Hands Off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
If you want Congress to keep its hands off Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, now is the time to ACT. We need your help TODAY ! Click below !

Thanks for All You do !

Stand Up To Wall-Street !

Where Do You Live ?

Occupy Wall Street protests continue to spread across the country. Outrage against an economy stacked against the 99% is growing. And the media is paying attention. Finally, our national debate has shifted from austerity and cuts to jobs, inequality and our broken economic system. But Congress still isn’t listening to the 99%. Policies continue to fail the 99% and reward the rich at the expense of the rest of us. Late Thursday night, it happened again: Senate Republicans once again blocked progress for workers with a political maneuver, filibustering the Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act. It didn’t get a vote at all. Justice for the 99% once again was delayed. If Congress won’t represent the 99%, then we clearly need to put our anger into action and stand together. Let’s build a movement that is strong enough that our elected officials will have no choice but to start addressing the needs of the 99%. If you can’t join protesters on the ground, one way to make your voice heard is to send a message of solidarity.
Your message of solidarity—which will be delivered by Working America—will go a long way to energize the protesters who are camping out in the rain and cold. And it only takes a moment to write.> >http://act.aflcio.org/c/18/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=3044 <

It’s even better if you can join an Occupy event yourself. Since the protests are a truly organic movement, and aren’t organized by the AFL-CIO, we can’t tell you exactly what will be happening when you arrive. But what we can tell you is this: The more people who can stand in solidarity, the better. Once you join your local protest, you can find ways to get involved. Check out this map of protests.
http://www.meetup.com/occupytogether/
We’ll continue to urge Congress to do what’s right on jobs, despite setbacks and obstacles. But in addition to directly communicating with Congress, each of us has to do his or her part to change our national conversation if we’re going to move America forward. One easy but powerful way to do that right now is to show support for activists who are keeping the Occupy movement going. If you’re able, we hope you’ll also join an Occupy event in your area. And stay tuned for more ways to make your voice heard on and offline in the coming weeks.

Let’s keep standing togetherwe are the 99%.

In Solidarity,

Less for Unions = More for CEO`s

Attacking Unions = Attacking People !

Whether on Wall Street or in the heartland, corporations are continuing to squeeze workers for all they can.

American Crystal Sugar is no different. Despite record profits three years in a row, on August 1, the company locked out more than 1,300 workers in Iowa, Minnesota, and North Dakota. Rather than negotiate a fair deal with its workforce, management chose to try to break the union. Will you help American Crystal workers get back on the job – and back supporting their families?
Sign our petition to CEO Dave Berg TODAY to urge him to end the lockout.
Locked-out workers just wanted a fair wage increase and affordable healthcare coverage. Instead, American Crystal pushed to double their healthcare costs and weaken job security. And now, both lives and livelihoods are on the line. Dan Dumas is an American Crystal employee who desperately wants to get back to work. His daughter Kayla was a victim of a horrible car accident and was in a coma for three months. While Kayla has made considerable progress, her recovery and therapy hang in the balance since Dan's healthcare coverage was cut off in August.1
There's too much at stake! Sign our petition to American Crystal Sugar NOW.
Together, the workers, company, and growers have helped to build the local economy, support families, and make their communities flourish. Now American Crystal's destructive lockout is putting it all in jeopardy. Around the country, people are fighting back against this corporate greed and standing up for working Americans. Will you stand up and fight back too ?
Tell American Crystal's CEO Dave Berg not to turn his back on workers and local communities.

Law Breaker, Making Judements/Laws !

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas...Deadbeat Tax-Payer ?

One of the bedrock principles of democracy is that nobody is above the law — not even Supreme Court justices like Clarence Thomas.

Thomas has flouted the law for years by failing to disclose his wife's substantial income despite being legally required to report it.That is why U.S. Representative Louise Slaughter is demanding that the Judicial Conference, an administrative arm of the court, uphold the Ethics in Government Act by referring Thomas' apparent misdeeds to the Attorney General for further investigation.
Rep. Slaughter has written a letter to Chief Justice John Roberts, who is the presiding officer of the Judicial Conference, about this, and she has invited Americans to add their voice by co-signing the letter
(which you can read below).
Co-sign Rep. Slaughter's letter demanding action on Clarence Thomas. Click here to automatically add your name. It's inconceivable that a Supreme Court justice like Clarence Thomas would be unable to understand how to fill out the simple disclosure forms. And now information has come out showing Thomas accurately filled out the form for years before abruptly failing to do so. Failure to disclose is a serious breach of the law, and the Ethics in Government Act requires the U.S. Judicial Conference to refer any judge to the Attorney General whom the Conference "has reasonable cause to believe has willfully failed to file a report or has willfully falsified or willfully failed to file information required to be reported." We need to make sure Chief Justice Roberts knows the eyes of Congress and the American people are on him, and we need to raise our voices and demand he take action. Co-sign Rep. Slaughter's letter demanding action on Clarence Thomas. Click here to automatically sign the petition.

Tennessee`s Diane Black (R) District#6 Representing Who ?

House to Vote on Rep. Diane Black (R) Tennessee District#6
Bill Paring Down Health Law's Medicaid Expansion
By Julian Pecquet - 10/21/11

The House will vote next week on legislation that will prevent as many as 1 million middle-income Americans from becoming eligible for Medicaid under the healthcare reform law, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor(upper right) (R-Va.) announced Friday. The Medicaid eligibility bill, sponsored by Rep. Diane Black (R-Tenn.)(upper left), is the last bill on the leader's weekly schedule. It cuts the deficit by about $13 billion over 10 years and is expected to pass with bipartisan support. The health law currently counts only the taxable portion of Social Security benefits when calculating Medicaid eligibility, allowing up to a million middle-income early retirees to potentially be eligible for a program meant to help low-income people. Black's bill would replace the healthcare law's Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) with the more restrictive eligibility standard for federal assistance programs. Black said her bill was a matter of "fairness" during markup in the Ways and Means Committee last week. It cleared the panel 23-12, with Rep. Ron Kind (D-Wis.) voting with Republicans. Without the change, Black said at the time, the law "could result in individuals whose incomes are up to 425 percent of the poverty level receiving Medicaid. This is unacceptable."Many Democrats have concerns, however. They point out that the MAGI definition was chosen to create a seamless transition between eligibility for Medicaid and for insurance subsidies under the healthcare law. By counting Social Security benefits as income, Black's bill tightens the eligibility standard not only for Medicaid but for private plan subsidies as well. During markup, Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.) called the Black bill "Republicans' first step on the slippery slope to limit middle-class Americans' ability to claim certain deductions for retirement security, college tuition expenses or even adoption assistance.

The Rich Get Richer...The Poor, Well You Know !

Billion$ in Profits, Zero in Taxes
Wednesday, October 19, 2011 Posted by Jim Hightower
Listen to this Commentary

Let's play, "Scamming the System !" It's the exciting and richly rewarding game that allows every American to use offshore income shelters and a labyrinth of loopholes to dodge their tax responsibilities. To get in the game, all you need is a few dozen tax lawyers, a flock of lobbyists, and an office in the Cayman Islands.
What ? You don't have any of those things ? Well now – that's your fault, isn't it?
But them that's got – including Boeing, eBay, GE, Verizon, and at least a couple of dozen other brand-name players – are in the game big time. A new report by the Institute for Policy Studies reveals that these multibillion-dollar giants pay far more to their CEOs than they pay in taxes to help fund our nation's crucial needs.
In fact, IPS reports that these top executives got their fat paychecks precisely because they were so focused on tax dodging. The corporations analyzed in the report averaged $1.9 billion in profits last year, yet paid zero in federal income taxes – instead, manipulating the system to get an average of $400 million each in refunds from the IRS! For being such skilled scammers, the chieftains of these corporations raked in an average of $16 million in personal pay last year – way above the average pay for CEOs of other big businesses.
Meanwhile, corporations are lobbying Washington to be given a tax cut. They wail that the U.S. corporate tax rate of 35 percent is higher than any other industrial nation except Japan and that this "burden" is hobbling their global competitiveness. B.S.as the IPS exposé documents, these scammers aren't paying anywhere near 35 percent – if anything.
Wow, these greedheads really put the "sin" in cynical. To help stop them from gaming us, check out the Institute's reform recommendations Here>

War in Iraq is Over ! Did We Win ?

Iraq War ~ Did We Win ? If Yes, What did We Win ?

The United States will withdraw almost all its troops from Iraq by the end of the year, as a current agreement with Iraq dictates. Only about 150 troops, a negligible force, will remain to assist in arms sales.
The United States had expected that some of the roughly 40,000 Americans in Iraq would remain there to aid in training and security. But the two nations were unable to reach a deal on a key issue regarding legal immunity for U.S. troops.

Editorial : President Obama, inherited a War/Mess ! I`m not sure about all of this quite yet ? When the Troops come home, I`ll be more positive. This is wonderful news, do not misunderstand me. We have sacrificed too many lives. We spent too much money. So, the question remains, "Did We Win"? If we did, what did we win ? And did we pay/cost too much ?

Old-Line Retailers – Where Did They Go?

Arbor Drugs
Arbor Drugs opened its doors in Troy in 1974, when founder Eugene Applebaum combined several drug stores under the name. At the time, he owned a handful of pharmacies, including one in Ann Arbor. Because the Ann Arbor store was the best of the bunch, he decided to use the second half of the city’s name for his business.

Atlas Beverage Company
For more than 60 years, Atlas Beverage Company produced carbonated beverages with names like Brownie Root Beer, Bulldog Ginger Beer, Cheer-Up, V-Mix, and Golden & Pale Dry Ginger Ale. A Polish immigrant in Hamtramck founded the company in 1929, and it closed in 1996.

Barthwell Drugs
When the pharmacy where Sidney Barthwell was employed failed during the Great Depression, Barthwell borrowed $500 from friends to open Barthwell Drugs in 1933. Barthwell Drugs grew to become the largest chain of black-owned drugstores in the United States, with a total of nine stores and three ice-cream parlors. Although the chain no longer exists, the Barthwell legacy remains in Detroit with the establishment the Sidney Barthwell Endowed Scholarship at Wayne State Universitys College of Pharmacy.

Burroughs
The Burroughs Adding Machine Company moved to Detroit in 1904 and was once the largest adding-machine company in the United States. William Seward Burroughs founded the company when he invented the Burroughs Registering Accountant in the 1880s; it was the first practical adding-listing machine that printed calculations on paper tapes. The company partnered with the Sperry Corporation in the 80s and is now called Unisys. Although the company is now headquartered in Blue Bell, N.Y. It currently still occupies the old Burroughs factory and office space in Plymouth, Mich.

B. Siegel Company
B. Siegel Company’s fine-clothing store in Detroit was originally Heyns Bazaar, until Benjamin Siegel purchased it in the late 1800s and changed the stores name. The Woodward Avenue shop was reputed to be the finest and most complete suit and cloak store in America, until the company filed for bankruptcy in 1981.

Crowley Milner and Company (Crowleys)
When Detroit department store Partridge and Blackwell was struggling to stay in business, the Crowley brothers stepped in and took over. In the early 1900s, the store flourished by catering to the city's affluent clientele, but by the end of the century, Crowleys had bowed out of the market!

Cunninghams
Andrew Cunningham opened Cunninghams Drugs in 1889 and had 11 stores in downtown Detroit when the company was purchased by Economical Drugs owner Nate Shapero in 1931. Cunninghams was famous for its special promotions and used an elephant symbol to represent their jumbo sodas, sundaes, and photo-print services. The chains slogans included: Don't say drug store "Just say Cunninghams and We're a drug store and a whole lot more."

Farmer Jack
The story of Farmer Jack stores can be traced to 1924, when Russian immigrant Tom Borman opened Tom's Quality Meats in Detroit. Tom and his brother, Al, ran grocery stores that were a metro Detroit staple, becoming Farmer Jack in 1966. The last remaining Farmer Jack stores closed in 2007 (some were converted to A&P’s), others are just empty shells of abandoned buildings.

Federals
Steven West's spans a range of endeavors, from writing five self-help books to committing some major tax evasion. He's perhaps best-known in the Detroit area for (BURNING), taking over Federals department store in the late 70s. In 1980, Federals dissolved.

F&M
Phar-Mor, Drug Emporium, and F&M were once the most powerful bargain drugstore chains in America. The industry was pioneered in Ferndale when Fred and Margaret Cohen opened the first F&M in 1955. The Cohen's business strategy was selling brand-name products at bargain prices, relying on word-of-mouth advertising, and banking on stock-up shopping popular in more affluent areas. When the Cohen's sold the business in 1977, their 9,000-square-foot store was grossing $13 million per year.

Fretters
Ollie Fretter opened his first self-titled electronics store in Livonia in the 1950s. He may best be remembered for his commercials, in which he promised, "I'll give you five pounds of coffee if I can't beat your best deal."

Gantos
Lebanese immigrant Theodore Gantos long dreamed of opening his own linen store, and when the devastation of the Great Depression ended, he did just that. With his wife, Haseebie, he opened the first Gantos store in Grand Rapids in 1932. Over the next few decades, the store shifted gears to become a successful women’s-wear boutique before going out of business in 2000.

Grinnell's Pianos
Once known as the largest piano factory on the earth, Grinnell's Pianos opened its doors in Holly, Mich., in 1913. The company lasted for nearly a century, thanks in part to its quality pianos and to its consistent community involvement hosting annual statewide music festivals.

Harmony House
Carl Thom opened the first Harmony House music store in Hazel Park in 1947. Known for its superb selection of Detroit music, the chain grew to 38 stores before finally closing in 2002.

Highland Superstores
In 1933, Harry Mondry founded the first Highland Appliance Store, named for its location in Highland Park. The company had a dramatic rise and fall in its time, expanding to three states before finally liquidating in 1993.

Himelhochs
The first Himelhoch's clothing store opened on Washington Boulevard in downtown Detroit in 1907. Fifty years later, the chain had stretched across the country, and even to Paris. But in 1977, the company filed for bankruptcy and closed. Its original location on Washington has been preserved as a historic landmark.

Hudsons
The J.L. Hudson Company was founded in 1881 by Joseph L. Hudson. The 29-story flagship store, located at 1206 Woodward in downtown Detroit, was the worlds tallest department store throughout most of the 20th century, with 706 fitting rooms, 68 elevators, 51 display windows, five restaurants, a fine-art gallery, and a wine department. After many changes in the retail sector, the chain was eventually folded into Macys.

Hughes & Hatcher
In 1910, Fred Hughes and Leslie Hatcher opened their clothing store in downtown Detroit, and it soon became the top name in gentle men’s fine apparel. Aside from its stupendously stylish suits, Hughes & Hatcher was known for having the largest display windows in town.

Jacobson's
In 1838, the first Michigan Jacobson's store opened in Reed City, Mich. The store catered to the fashion needs of upscale Michigan clientele, and eventually expanded to Florida and other mid western states. The company closed after more than 150 years.

Joshua Doore Furniture
In 1973, Harvey Leach opened the doors to Joshua Doore and, for years, drew in customers with the charming slogan “You've got an uncle in the furniture business.” A few years later, amid the company’s transformation into Uncle Robinson Furniture, Leach was found dead in the trunk of his car, allegedly as a result of financial challenges.

Kern's
Where the Compuware building stands in downtown Detroit today once stood another grand retailer of the city's golden era, Kern's Department Store. Kern's opened in 1900 and competed with J.L. Hudsons until closing in 1959. After much restoration, the famous Kern's clock was rededicated by Compuware in 2003.
"Meet You under the clock at Kern"`s !

Kinsel Drug Store

Klines
Eugene B. Kline founded Kline's women’s fashion store in 1911. The chic-looking store on Woodward Avenue was called the most modern store in the country in 1940.

Merchant of Vino
Founded in 1974, Merchant of Vino was well known for its fine wine and gourmet foods. Although Eddie Jonna eventually sold his popular chain to Whole Foods Co., his sons Marc and Matthew picked up where their father left off, opening the state-of-the-art Plum Markets now seen around metro Detroit.

New York Carpet World
Marvin Berlin opened New York Carpet World in 1967. Along with his partner, Irving Nusbaum, Berlin grew the chain to an impressive 250 stores in 17 states, including Michigan, making it the top source for household flooring.

Perrys Drug Store
Jack A. Robinson founded the hugely successful Perry's Drug Store chain, which was taken over by Rite-Aid in the mid-90s. The first Perry's store opened in Pontiac in 1957, named for its location on Perry Street.

Pfeiffer Brewing Company
Conrad Pfeiffer began brewing his own beer in 1882. His Art Deco red-brick brewery was built between Beaufait and Bellevue avenues on the east side of Detroit, complete with a stable and hospitality area that offered tours, products for sale, and a beer garden. Pfeiffer Brewing Company began producing its olive-drab cans with black lettering for the government during World War II, soon after it began selling its yellow Johnny Fifer cans to the public.

R.H. Fyfe and Company
Detroit was once home to the largest shoe store in the world. Fyfe's opened in 1865 and, by 1919, it had expanded to include 10 floors of shoes and service areas, as well as a miniature-golf course. After closing, the headquarters at Woodward and Adams was converted into residential lofts.

Sams Jams
Opened in 1979, Sam's Jams was a hip Ferndale record shop where customers could always find rare and vintage tunes. Sam's frequently hosted album signings with popular and alternative bands of the day. But much to the dismay of the local underground music community, Sam's closed its doors in 1993.

Sanders
Frederick Sanders opened his first retail shop in downtown Detroit on June 17, 1875. At one time, Sanders had over 57 stores around town selling an assortment of candy, fudge toppings, and baked goods. Sanders sold his first Ice Cream Soda in 1876, when he substituted ice cream for the sweet cream used in his Sweet Cream Soda.

Sebastian S. Kresge/Kmart
With his humble beginnings, historic philanthropist Sebastian S. Kresge likely couldn't have imagined that the city of Detroit would turn his modest five-and-dime store into the gargantuan enterprise it became. S.S. Kresge Co. opened in Detroit in 1899, and later expanded into Kmart Corporation, before merging with Sears, Roebuck & Co.

Sibleys Shoes
Aaron Ross and Norm Rosenfeld opened the first Sibley's shoe store in Detroit in 1920 and soon expanded to various locations throughout Michigan and Ohio. Headquartered in the Fox Building and, for a time, the Renaissance Center, the chain was finally dismantled in 2003.

Strohs
In 1850, Bernhard Stroh established what would become a Detroit institution, then referred to as Lions Head brewery. Twin Pines Dairy Farm
It's been a long time since fresh milk, cream, and cottage cheese were delivered right to your milk chute, but for almost 20 years, Twin Pines was perhaps Detroit's finest creamery. Before the emergence of convenience stores, Twin Pines was such a success that it even had its own children’s television show, Milky's Party Time, from 1950 to 1967. "Milky the Clown"

Vernors
Legend has it that Vernor's ginger ale was created in 1866 when Detroit pharmacist James Vernor returned home from the Civil War and found that the syrup he'd created and stored for four years had transformed into a deliciously different drink. Combined with a scoop of vanilla ice cream (preferably Strohs), the distinctly Detroit soda created a Midwest delicacy: the Boston cooler, believed to be named after Detroit's Boston Boulevard. I still buy it and drink it ! Yum Yum !

Winkelmans
The first Winkelman's store was built in Detroit in 1928. The founders, brothers Isadore and Leon Winkelman, were born and raised in the Upper Peninsula, but fell in love with the city and stayed to open their successful clothing stores.

Woolworths
Perhaps the best-known of the old five-and-dimes was Woolworth's, which expanded into a larger discount store chain and thrived for most of the 20th century. After the stores demise in the 80s, the company broke off into several parts, including a sportswear division now known as Foot Locker.

Social Security Increase 2012...You Bet`Cha

Social Security Increase...

By : Don Jones = Underdog...10/20/11

Social Security recipients will receive a(COLA) cost of living adjustment of 3.6% starting in January 2012, their first raise in three years.
Because inflation has been very low in recent years, beneficiaries have not seen an increase since 2009, when they received a 5.8% boost.
However, most seniors are not likely to receive the full amount of the increase because an expected hike in Medicare premiums could eat up part of the raise. The change in Medicare premiums, which could increase by a double-digit rate, is expected to be announced next month. Put it in one pocket and take it out of the other. You Bet`Cha !

"It's my philosophy that in government we should probably have fewer people --
but people that we pay better."
-Gov. Bill Haslam

THIS WEEKEND:
Nearly 1,000 State Employees On Food
Stamps:

Nearly 1,000 Tennessee state employees have such low salaries that they must rely on government assistance to put food on their tables.
Robert O'Connell with the Tennessee State Employee Association said they were shocked when they discovered the number of state workers on food stamps.
"We were floored by the number of people," said O'Connell. "I don't think Tennesseans are going to be proud that we are paying this large group not enough to feed their families." The TSEA fired off a letter to Governor Bill Haslam demanding the state pay more. The group believes part of the problem is that state salaries haven't kept up with the cost of living. After it made a public records request, the state employee association learned 964 state workers were on food stamps. The Department of Environment and Conservation had 129 employees on food stamps. The Department of Corrections had 191 employees on public aid, and the
Department of Human Services had 228 workers on welfare.
Ironically, DHS which gives out food stamps, had the largest number of workers on the program. O'Connell said if salaries aren't raised, state workers will start to leave the public sector. "You won't have your potholes patched. You won't have the drunk driver stopped by the highway patrolman, and you won't have the DCS worker saving some children, if you don't pay them enough," said O'Connell. "Eventually people of quality will leave public service. According to the TSEA, some state workers make as little as $14,000 a year. The medians salary for a state employee is $31,000 a year.

Editorial : Let me see, I give all of my appointed cabinet members a raise of 11% and then tell my state workers to eat cake or sign up for food stamps. Are you happy now Tennesseans ? Better wake up. Hey folks, I could`nt possibly make up stuff like this. The facts are much better.

Below is letter from Senator Ole Flim-Flam, Bob Corker (R)Tennessee, remember he voted against us and voted for China and the rest.

Dear Don,

Thank you for taking the time to contact my office regarding China's currency manipulation practices and S.1619, the Currency Exchange Rate Oversight Reform Act of 2011. Your input is important to me, and I appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts. Like you, I am concerned about China's significantly undervalued currency, which is a contributing force to the growing U.S. trade deficit with China. The value of China's currency has significant budgetary and trade implications, and we should continue to encourage the Chinese to permanently adopt a floating currency system that is determined by market forces. As you may know, S.1619 would provide authorization for the imposition of countervailing duties to address the fundamentally undervalued currency of any foreign country. There's no question that China manipulates its currency, but I don't believe this bill would bring any production to the U.S. or create one job here in America. This approach is typical Washington, a cut-your-nose-off-to-spite-your-face response that would prove counterproductive. We've seen this play out before. I feel that we need to find policies that push China in the direction of further economic openness without starting a damaging trade war. We must also continue to push China to open its markets to American made goods. We can do that by addressing China's disregard for intellectual property rights which protects the rights of American inventors, pushing China to invest in manufacturing plants in the United States, and continuing to ensure that we maintain access to China's 1.3 billion consumers. Despite my concern for the threat of an impending trade war and my opposition to the bill, the Senate passed S.1619. You may be interested to read the Wall Street Journal op-ed that I wrote on this issue, which I have included in this letter. Thank you again for your letter. I hope you will continue to share your thoughts with me over the course of my term.

Sincerely, Bob Corker(R)United States Senator-Tennessee
