The Bush tax cuts, like the Iraq War, are one of the primary drivers of our large federal deficit. And like the Iraq War, the Bush tax cuts were sold to the public through outright deception.

The snake oil the Bush administration peddled was that the tax cuts, which overwhelmingly went to the rich and the ultra-rich, would spur the economy.

Now that we're facing the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression, many so-called "conservatives," joined with corporatist "moderates," are singing the same tune. They are demanding we extend the tax giveaways for the wealthy (set to expire at the end of the year) at a cost of $700 billion over the next decade.
Meanwhile, these same members of Congress are demanding deep cuts to the social safety net for the poor, the middle class, the unemployed and the elderly.
There is very little that so clearly demonstrates the callous venality of some members of Congress than the simultaneous demand to give Paris Hilton a tax cut while pushing benefit cuts to Social Security.

Tax cuts for economic elites aren't free and they aren't effective. The government still needs revenue and giving away money to millionaires (who on average would receive over $100,000 in tax cuts per year if all the Bush tax cuts are extended) takes away from the money we can spend to help the victims of this economic downturn. There is simply no excuse for Congress to plead poverty when it comes to helping those in need while literally giving it away to those who don't need it.

When giving the Republicans’ opening remarks at the health care summit earlier this year, I told President Obama exactly what the health care reform bill would mean for Americans: “It means there will be about a half trillion dollars of new taxes in it. It means that for millions of Americans, premiums will go up, because when people pay those new taxes, premiums will go up, and they will also go up because of the government mandates.” I voted against the health care bill because it was—and is—an historic mistake. About six months after the bill became law, the Wall Street Journal reports that individuals’ premiums are already going up. I have already voted for legislation to repeal the new law, and if there is another motion to repeal it, I'll vote for it again. The wisest course now is repealing the law and replacing it with immediate insurance reforms and step-by-step reductions in health care costs so that more Americans can afford to buy insurance. For example, we should allow buying insurance across state lines; permit small businesses to join together to offer cheaper insurance to employees; limit junk lawsuits against doctors; reduce waste, fraud and abuse; and expand health savings accounts. Senators on my side of the aisle repeatedly urged these steps last year, before the bill became law. Now, we should repeal this law and replace it with sensible, thoughtful legislation to reduce your health care costs.

REFLECTIONS ON ELECTION NIGHT
NOVEMBER 2, 2010

Upon one of Abraham Lincoln’s several election defeats, on a night like this, Lincoln quipped, “I feel like the little boy who stubbed his toe in the dark. I am too old to cry, but it hurts too much to laugh.”

So it is for many of us tonight.

But Scripture teaches us in Ecclesiastes:

To everything there is a season,
and a time to every purpose under heaven.
...
A time to weep, and a time to laugh,
a time to mourn, and a time to dance…

This was not our time to win this election, but there will be other elections, and there will be other times.

Perhaps for me, certainly for so many of you who have worked so hard in this campaign, there will be other times, and there will be victories.

This campaign may be over, but our work is not. People still need us. Our country still needs us.

Our cause is bigger than one campaign, one election.

To quote an author my son John shared today, “Never think that God’s delays are God’s denials. Hold on; hold fast; hold out.”

So keep the fight, not against each other, but for each other.

For those for whom the Hebrew prophets demanded justice, the widows and the orphans, the sojourners and the poor; and for all those Jesus called “the least of these,” the hungry and the hurting, the sick and the needy…

Keep the fight.

For the woman at the Jackson church who passed me a note saying her three siblings had worked a combined 77 years but have now lost their jobs and need work…

Keep the fight.

For the child with the learning disability who couldn’t see the blackboard and failed three vision tests but couldn’t afford glasses because her mother is disabled and her father lost his job…

Keep the fight.

For the 63-year-old woman in Gibson County who for years has worked at a factory handling products with gnarled, arthritic fingers, and now has lost her job and doesn’t know how she’ll provide for the granddaughter she is raising…

Keep the fight.

For the Henry County man who has worked every working day for 15 years since he beat the cancer, but who has not one day had health insurance because of his “pre-existing condition”…

Keep the fight.

For the Benton County small business owner who agonizes whether to let employees go to pay for the health insurance cost increases for other workers…

Keep the fight.

For the seniors who depend on Social Security, and who, without it, would sink into poverty or worse….

Keep the faith.

For our children and grandchildren who suffer under the largest deficits and debt our country has ever known…

Keep the faith.

For the soldiers like Captain Brent Morel who gave his life defending our freedom, and for his parents, and for all the soldiers, veterans, and military families who sacrifice so much for our country…

Keep the faith.

For the strength of our state and the soul of our country…

Keep the faith.

Brothers and sisters, that is our calling. That is our cause.

No less tonight than this morning, and even more tomorrow.

I just called Stephen Fincher to acknowledge his election, and Donn Janes to thank him for his courageous campaign.

I also need to thank those of you here tonight who have kept the fight and the faith over the last year -- especially Nancy Carol Sue Jane Amy Angeline Julie Ann Caroline, and our wonderful sons, John, Rick and Ben.

And some not here -- my mentor Governor Ned McWherter, our dear friends Congressman John and Betty Ann Tanner who served us all so well, my Mother, who badly wants to be here but tonight is not able, and my late Father.

And the hardest working campaign staff in America. Campaign team, please raise your hands so we can recognize -- and thank you.

Ecclesiastes also teaches: “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might.”

Brothers and sisters, we can rest assured that we did this with all our might. And as I look at you, my family, and friends as close as family, I am filled with gratitude--and with hope.

The Apostle Paul reminds us:

“Suffering produces endurance,
Endurance produces character,
Character produces hope,
And hope does not fail us…”

Many of you suffered for this campaign, working 14-16 hours a day, six days a week, for weeks on end.

Many of you left jobs and schools to join us. Others of you did your jobs or school or both and still volunteered hundreds of hours. Your sacrifice has been astounding, your work has been impressive, your commitment to our country has been, and is, inspiring.

Your suffering has produced endurance, your endurance has produced and revealed your character, and your character gives me - and many - great hope!

What you accomplished in the last year is simply amazing. You raised over $2 million dollars. You earned 8 of 8 newspaper endorsements. You gave out thousands of books, and tens of thousands of cards. You knocked on 60,000 doors. You made 130,000 calls.

You ran through parades at festivals celebrating everything edible, from strawberries to soybeans, taters to tomatoes, catfish to doodle soup, and at festivals honoring people ranging from the Irish to famous Americans like Davy Crockett and Uncle Sam.

You did everything that could be done, and if it had been our season, it would have been more than enough. And I cannot possibly thank you enough.

We traveled 40,000 thousand miles in that old red truck to talk with thousands of Tennesseans in the 8th District. From Memphis and Millington in the west to Montgomery County in the east, from Dickson and Dover in the east, to Dresden and Dyersburg in the west, and everywhere in between. And many other Tennessee towns and cities, too.

Across the state, Tennesseans have shared your stories and struggles, your trials and tears, your heartaches and hopes. I heard you, and I won’t forget.

We will keep the fight.

We will keep the faith.

Look out, they're angry. Foaming-at-the-mouth angry. And they're lashing out, saying they won't take it anymore. As one of their leaders angrily cried, "It's a war." Indeed – they're on the move to take their country back.

Forget the Tea Party rowdies, this is the Champagne Party ! More precisely, it's the Dom Pérignon-$1000-a-Bottle-Champagne-Party, propelled by – get this – billionaire's rage. Yes, some of the richest, most pampered people on the planet – people who literally wallow in luxury every day, with never a concern about losing a job, a home, health care, or getting their kids into college – these people are wailing in self-pity. They are Wall Street hedge-fund operators, which essentially means they are high-flying financial flimflammers. What has stoked them into an elitist fury is an Obama proposal to close off a ridiculous tax loophole that has let them pay only 15 percent of their lavish income in taxes, rather than the 35-percent rate that us commoners pay. One of the richest of the ragers, Steve Schwarzman of the Blackstone Group, sees Obama's proposal as an outrageous intrusion into the suites of the elite, comparing it to "when Hitler invaded Poland." This over-the-top-tantrum from a multibillionaire – a guy who spent $3 million in 2007 to throw himself a birthday party! Come on, Steve, pay your taxes! Pathetically, the real root of this sad Hedge Fund Rebellion, is a feeling by these powerful, super-privileged megalomaniacs that they are being picked on. One even whined that asking hedge funders to pay taxes at the same rate as everyone else amounts to the "persecution of the minority." Good grief man, get a grip! Next thing you know, these doofuses will hire Glenn Beck to host a weepy telethon to "Save the Billionaires Tax Loophole."

The Joint Economic Committee has released a report that shows that Republican proposals to make changes to Social Security would result in benefit cuts for millions and put the program's solvency in jeopardy. The report shows that two aspects of GOP plans — privatizing and progressive price indexing — would cuts the benefits of millions of middle-income workers and put nearly 50 percent of seniors at risk of living in poverty without Social Security benefits, compared with 10 percent who face poverty under the program. The issue has become a central focus in several House elections as the mid-term elections approach although it hasn't been an issue raised recently by Congress. "This report highlights that it is unwise to look to the stock market for a guaranteed annuity," said JEC Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney, (D-N.Y.). "We all know all too well that the stock market is subject to wild swings. We cannot afford to roll the dice with our seniors’ retirement security." The report, "Unnecessary Risk: The Perils of Privatizing Social Security," focused its analysis on recently revived Republican proposals to privatize the program by allowing future retirees to divert a portion of their payroll taxes to individual investment accounts. Under GOP proposals, according to the report, private accounts are unlikely to provide a guaranteed retirement annuity, indexed for inflation, as the current Social Security system provides. The report also found that allowing current contributors to divert funds out of the general Social Security fund into private accounts will "exacerbate the shortfall in revenues for current and future retirees as well as for current and future recipients of disability and survivors insurance." As an example, the report showed that an annuity purchased by a worker who retired in 2008 would replace only 40 percent of their final income, down from 87 percent replacement just two years earlier. So a worker expecting an annuity of $867 per month in 2006 would have received $399 per month if they retired in 2008.

The Federal Reserve, which controls America's monetary policy, says it is trying to invigorate job creation in our country by slashing interest rates to the bone. This move allows big corporations to borrow money for next to nothing, so they can expand and start hiring again.

Great goal ! How's it working out ?

Well, the first step has gone splendidly, with such giants as DuPont, Hertz, IBM, Microsoft, and PepsiCo rushing to grab the windfall. They've borrowed hundreds of billions of dollars interest rates of less than one percent. However, there's been quite a stumble on step two of the Fed's plan. Rather than putting this enormous stash of cash to work for America, the corporations are simply squirreling it away for their own enrichment, refusing to spend it on the job expansion that our economy desperately needs. For example, Microsoft – one of the richest corporations on Earth – amassed nearly $5 billion under this "opportunistic borrowing" scheme, yet has put none of the cheap money into job creation. Instead, it is using a big chunk of it to buy back stock from its own shareholders – a move that merely profits the handful of rich elites who control Microsoft.
Worse, such corporate powers as Hertz and PepsiCo are using the funds to take over competitors. These consolidations will actually cut jobs, while reducing consumer choices and raising our prices. Indeed, there's no provision in the Fed's program to keep the giants from investing the money in foreign expansion, thus offshoring more American Jobs. This is Jim Hightower saying... And there's the rub in nearly all of Washington's indirect job creation efforts – officials blithely dole out billions and even trillions to corporations and banks, with no strings attached. So the big shots and ba****** gleefully grab the money and run.

Republicans Support Off-Shoring Jobs

Like the clear results on a pH test strip, the vote in the U.S. Senate this week on the Creating American Jobs and Ending Off-shoring Act showed Republicans’ true color: Red. Red for China. Or Indonesia. Or Mexico. Or anywhere multi-national corporations get tax breaks for exporting American jobs. In this test of loyalty, every Republican in the Senate voted for corporate profits over American workers. No fluke, this is a GOP pattern. The red party has consistently sided with giant corporations to the detriment of the American economy and American workers. In voting against health care reform, Republicans chose giant health insurance corporations over uninsured Americans. In opposing financial reform, Republicans embraced Wall Street over the taxpayers who bailed out the big banks and don’t want to do it again. Republicans vainly attempted to rationalize those votes as opposing big government. There’s no big government issue in the Creating American Jobs and Ending Off-shoring Act. That Act would have removed tax incentives the U.S. government gives corporations when they close domestic factories, fire American workers and move production overseas. And, conversely, the Act would have instituted tax incentives for corporations to return foreign employment to U.S. soil. Every Republican in the Senate voted against the Act. They voted to continue forcing Americans to give tax breaks to corporations to ship their jobs overseas. The GOP said it is right and proper for Americans to pay multi-national corporations to kill American jobs. And Republicans said it would be wrong to do the opposite -- to use American tax dollars to encourage corporations to move off-shored jobs back to the U.S.
Democrats, whose first priority is American workers, are pushing a 17-bill Make it in America plan. The Creating American Jobs and Ending Offshoring Act is part of that effort to bolster domestic industry and employment. With unemployment stuck at 9.6 percent and with the U.S. trade deficit destroying or displacing 5.6 million jobs -- 70 percent of them good-paying manufacturing jobs -- in just one year – 2007, Democrats developed their plan to preserve American industry and jobs. Recent surveys of likely voters suggest the Democrats’ Make it in American plan is exactly what Americans want. A bi-partisan polling team that conducted a survey of likely voters for the Alliance for American Manufacturing in April found that large majorities believe that manufacturing strength is crucial to U.S. economic security and that the government should fortify American industry. These voters told the pollsters that they believe America no longer leads the world in manufacturing but could again with proper support. The can-do-it attitude is realistic based on recent on-shoring by American manufacturers. General Electric is moving production of its energy-efficient water heaters from China to the U.S. Caterpillar and NCR, a technology company,are doing the same. A survey in June found 21 percent of North American manufacturers brought production into or closer to the U.S. in the previous three months and another 38 percent planned to research doing that. Manufacturers gave USA Today numerous reasons for this repatriation. Chinese wages and shipping costs have risen. They also cited poor quality of foreign manufactured goods; theft of intellectual property; inability to respond to customer demand because of long product delivery times, and the need to keep the assembly line close to engineers and suppliers. The trade publication, Supply Chain Digest, quoted two experts in a story about the on-shoring trend in August: “George Stalk, a consultant at Boston Consulting Group, has led research efforts showing the inventory benefits for high margin, fashion-oriented goods from bringing production at least back to North America almost always trump the value of lower manufacturing costs in Asia. This writer has said for sometime now, That I have Pulmonary Hypertension. I`ve learned recently that Vanderbilt Pulmonary is now, not sure of my diagnosis ! I visited Vandy Pulmonary September 23, 2010 My appointment was with Dr. Anna Hemnes, Pulmonary Specialist. I also saw my PH Nurse, Amy Mulican. After a long interview and going over the medicines I take. Dr. Hemnes arrived in my holding room. She sat down and we talked for a very lengthy time. The end results, was that she nor Dr. Ivan Robbins, Dr. Robbins is a specialist in Pulmonary Hypertension were sure that my diagnosis was/is correct ? Now, that might upset some, but I was delighted over her honesty and candor ! I have the option of going somewhere else, but, I really see no reason to leave Vanderbilt`s fine medical facility or those two wonderful Dr.`s Hemnes and Robbins ! Please be aware that, I`m a Vanderbilt Heart-Transplant 16 years post ! I`m a total success. I have written a letter of "Thank You" to Dr. Hemnes. I truly believe she is trying to find out what my problem is. I have informed her, how pleased I am with her care and treatment. I also informed her, if I was not too old, I would like Lung Transplant?

Alas, she informed me, I`m too old ! Would I have the Surgery ? In a Heartbeat(no pun intended)I also asked her not to give up on me, as I was not going to give up on myself or her ! This is a very sensitive matter. In her honesty and candor, (most would call it COPD and let it go at that) She chose to tell it, like it is, and for that I am most thankful. I once had a Pulmonary Dr. inform me that, we know a lot, but, we don`t know everything. I`m hoping that they have a monkey that they are trying out a new drug on and are having success with, I will volunteer to be their first human to try it on ! Life is a precious thing, I know that, and Vanderbilt is aware that. I`m not a hero, But Vanderbilt Medical Center and Hospital definitely are ! Vanderbilt is on the cutting edge of most medical treatments and new procedures, they develop them all of the time. Dr. Anna Hemnes, Pulmonary, is a great Dr. and human being. Dr. Ivan Robbins, Pulmonary is not only smart, but caring. Dr. Mark Wigger, Heart-Transplant Director and my Dr. is of the same cut. Dr. Thomas DiSalvo, Heart-Transplant is out of the same mold ! I`m not going to another facility unless Vanderbilt recommends it ! Why go somewhere else, when you`ve had the very best ? If I get a new diagnosis, I will pass it on to you. In the meantime, I am a mystery man !

Working Families Benefit from New Health Care Rules Effective Today

Today marks the six-month anniversary of the day President Obama signed the landmark health care reform law and also is the start date for several important provisions that will make quality health care more accessible and affordable for working families.

Starting today:

•Insurance companies will no longer be able to deny coverage for children with pre-existing conditions (though some are trying to dodge the new rule);
•Insurance companies will not be allowed to drop people, from coverage when they become sick;
•Young people will be able to stay on their parents’ policy until 26 years of age;
•Insurance companies cannot put a lifetime cap on benefits;
•Consumers who join a new plan will be able to keep their own doctors;
•Preventive care must be covered; and
•Consumers will have expanded rights to appeal insurance company decisions.
Also, early retirees with high cost cases will have assistance from a new program that will allow plans to continue to provide benefits for 55 to 64 year olds. And rates for Medicare drug plans and Medicare Advantage will remain stable in 2011, compared with 15 percent increases this year.

Says AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka:

Today we are one step closer to achieving quality, affordable health insurance for everyone in America. The legislation will help people who were previously uninsured and strengthen the protections offered to those who are already insured.

Speaking at a backyard health care gathering in Northern Virginia yesterday, Obama said:

All these things are designed not to have government more involved in health care. They’re designed to make sure that you have basic protections in your interactions with your insurance company; that you’re getting what you pay for; that you have some basic measures of protection in interacting with the health care system, which means that you’re not going to go bankrupt, you’re not going to lose your house if, heaven forbid, you end up having an accident, and you’re able to get the quality care that you need.

The Defining Issue: Who Should Get the Tax Cut -- The Rich or Everyone Else?
Not a bad issue for Democrats to run on this fall, or in 2012.

Republicans are hell bent on demanding an extension of the Bush tax cut for their patrons at the top, or else they'll pull the plug on tax cuts for the middle class. This is a gift for the Democrats. But before this can be a defining election issue in the midterms, Democrats have to bring it to a vote. And they've got to do it in the next few weeks, not wait until a lame-duck session after Election Day. Plus, they have to stick together (Ben Nelson, are you hearing me? House blue-dogs, do you read me? Peter Orszag, will you get some sense?) Not only is this smart politics. It's smart economics. The rich spend a far smaller portion of their money than anyone else because, hey, they're rich. That means continuing the Bush tax cut for them wouldn't stimulate much demand or create many jobs. But it would blow a giant hole in the budget -- $36 billion next year, $700 billion over ten years. Millionaire households would get a windfall of $31 billion next year alone. And the Republican charge that restoring the Clinton tax rates for the rich would hurt the economy -- because it would reduce the "incentives" of the rich (including the richest small business owners) to create jobs -- is ludicrous.
Under Bill Clinton and his tax rates, the economy roared. It created 22 million jobs. By contrast, during George Bush's 8 years, commencing with his big 2001 tax cut, the economy created only 8 million jobs. And as the new Census data show, nothing trickled down. In fact, the middle class families did far worse after the Bush tax cut. Between 2001 and 2007 -- even before we were plunged into the Great Recession -- the median wage dropped. It's an issue that could also be used to expose the giant chasm that's opened between the rich and everyone else -- aided and abetted by Republican policies. As I've noted before, in the late 1970s, the top 1 percent got 9 percent of total national income. By 2007, the top 1 percent got almost a quarter of total national income. These figures don't even count in taxes. The $1.3 trillion Bush tax cut of 2001 was a huge windfall for people earning over $500,000 a year. They got about 40 percent of its benefits. The Bush tax cut of 2003 was even better for high rollers. Those with net incomes of about $1 million got an average tax cut of $90,000 a year. Yet taxes on the typical middle-income family dropped just $217. Many lower-income families, who still paid payroll taxes, got nothing back at all. And, again, nothing trickled down. As I've emphasized, the U.S. economy has suffered mightily from the middle class's lack of purchasing power, while most of the economic gains have gone to the top. (The crisis was masked for years by women moving into paid work, everyone working longer hours, and, more recently, the middle class going into deep debt -- but all those coping mechanisms are now exhausted.) The great challenge ahead is to widen the circle of prosperity so the middle class once again has the capacity to keep the economy going. In other words, this is the right issue. It's the right time. It allows Democrats to explain what the Bush tax cuts really did, why supply-side economics is bogus, and the economic challenge ahead. Even if Democrats feel they have to respond to the Republican charge that taxes shouldn't be raised on anyone when the employment rate is 9.6 percent, they have a powerful fallback: Extend the Bush tax cuts for everyone through 2011, then end them for the rich while making them permanent for the middle class.
Get it, Democrats? Please don't blow it this time.

Against a backdrop of House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) pledging that a Republican-led Congress would increase the age to 70, the Times told the stories of several workers - an airline baggage handler, a nursing assistant, and a tire maker - including one who noted that at work, "dessert with lunch is ibuprofen." A recent study by the Center for Economic Policy Research found that one in three workers over age 58 works a physically demanding job [ http://bit.ly/cZnt6k ]. USW Pres. Gerard Gives Testimony Before U.S. House Committee

American workers expect government action on China’s currency manipulation

Washington, DC (Sept. 15, 2010) – Leo W. Gerard, International President(top left) of the United Steelworkers (USW), today testified on behalf of the AFL-CIO before a packed hearing of the Ways & Means Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives on China’s exchange rate. The hearing was led by Chairman Sandy Levin (D-MI), who stated: “There is no real question that China’s deliberately undervalued exchange rate is unfair, contributes to global trade imbalances, and cost the U.S. jobs and economic growth, particularly in the manufacturing sector.” Gerard responded by saying, “The question now is do we have the will to act to level the playing field and provide the support and assistance that millions of American workers and their communities expect and deserve?” He said the American economy remains mired in a deep recession. “Unemployment, underemployment, wage stagnation, foreclosures all paint a grim picture of an economy still struggling to recover.” Describing the past decade of soaring annual trade deficits with China, the USW president said they started from $84 billion in 2001 and have reached $227 billion last year. “This is clearly not the trade profile that the U.S. government predicted as the likely outcome of China’s WTO accession. But it is the result of concerted strategic interventions by the Chinese government over many years – and inaction by our own.” He declared, “These trade deficits are unsustainable and require immediate action. What we desire is a mutually respectful, functional and sustainable bilateral economic relationship.” Strongly asserting that the Chinese government’s practices amount to as much as a 40 percent subsidy for the products they export to the U.S., Gerard adds it in effect is “a tax on products we try to send there, while siphoning investment dollars vital to keeping the U.S. at the forefront of research and development.” In his testimony, Gerard revealed the drag on GDP growth that comes from the bilateral trade deficit has significantly broader economic implications. He said, “Preliminary estimates from the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) points to as much as a $500 billion reduction in our nation’s federal budget deficit over the next six years from ending China’s currency manipulation.” He argued before the committee, “Lost manufacturing jobs lead to lost tax revenue and higher budget deficits that limit our ability to invest in our future. This puts substantial pressure on federal, state and local budgets resulting in layoffs of teachers, police and other emergency responders. It doesn’t have to be this way.” The USW president wrapped up his comments by forcefully saying, “American workers, communities and industry have every right to expect their government to take action. It is long overdue. Speaking directly to the full House Committee, Gerard emphatically said: “The time for talk is over. We can create jobs by enforcing our trade laws consistently and proactively. On behalf of the working families of this nation, I urge you to take action now.” Gerard advocated the legislation to stop China’s currency manipulation was the Ryan-Murphy Bill, the Currency Reform for Fair Trade Act of 2010 (H.R. 2378).

Tennessee Hunting, An American Tradition ! Vote Yes !

Hunting in Tennessee, A Historical American Right !

On November 2, 2010 we will go to the polls to elect a new governor in Tennessee . On that same ballot will be the right to vote for an Amendment to the Tennessee Constitution allowing for the right of Tennesseans to hunt and fish. Even though we have been hunting and fishing in Tennessee as long as I have been alive, it is not a guaranteed right. With the amendment, it will make it much more difficult for anti hunting and fishing folks to challenge. In the last election for a Tennessee Governor, 1,900,000 votes were cast. In order to pass the amendment fifty (50%) plus one votes must be cast as a YES vote. If this election follows the pattern of the last election, we will need 950,001 votes. There are not enough registered voters who hunt and fish to pass this amendment by ourselves. Therefore, we need to make sure our spouses and our friends know to vote YES for the Amendment to the state constitution. I have talked to several folks about this and they have said "but we already have the right to hunt and fish". Yes we do but the animal rights folks (PETA) are very well funded and they are passionate about stopping hunting and fishing. If we stand by and do nothing, there very well may come a day when we no longer have these rights. Fourteen states have already passed an amendment to hunt and fish. Tennessee , Arkansas and South Carolina will vote for the amendment in November. Please, don't take your rights for granted. Send this email to everyone who believes we should have the right to hunt and fish.
