Let's be clear, there are any number of crises that demand urgent action by Congress — the foreclosure crisis, the unemployment crisis, the climate crisis to name just a few — but reducing the deficit isn't one of them. Furthermore, while politicians and the punditocracy in Washington are issuing dire warnings in an effort to generate a crisis atmosphere, the only concrete thing they can point to in order to support their Chicken Little routine is the so-called "fiscal cliff," the automatic cuts and tax increases that go into effect in the beginning of the year. But these cuts and tax increases are themselves the result of pre-emptive caving by President Obama and others to the Republicans' earlier (successful) attempts at hostage-taking. It's hard to imagine that President Obama could cut a better deal in the lame duck than what he could accomplish in the next Congress, with more Democrats in the House and the Senate. But there are deeply worrying signs that President Obama, after overwhelmingly beating Mitt Romney, is intent on cutting a deal with Republicans before the end of the year. What’s happening with Hostess Brands is a microcosm of what’s wrong with America, as Bain-style Wall Street vultures make themselves rich by making America poor. Crony capitalism and consistently poor management drove Hostess into the ground, but its workers are paying the price. These workers, who consistently make great products Americans love and have offered multiple concessions, want their company to succeed. They have bravely taken a stand against the corporate race-to-the-bottom. And now they and their communities are suffering the tragedy of a needless layoff. This is wrong. It has to stop. It’s wrecking America.

FISCAL CLIFF ? Sign Petition !

There's been a lot of talk about the so-called "fiscal cliff" lately, so let's just call this thing for what it really is -- a Republican scare tactic.

Everyone from economist Paul Krugman to investor Warren Buffet agrees that the "fiscal cliff" isn't really a cliff at all. But Republicans want you to think that the sky will fall unless a deal is reached by the end of the year.

Let me say this as simply as I can: Republicans are ginning up the "fiscal cliff" to scare Americans and force Democrats to extend the Bush tax cuts, while demanding cuts to vital programs like Medicare.

That's a bad deal. Our country can't afford to give away huge tax cuts to the rich and our seniors can't afford to live without Medicare or Social Security.

Tell Congress: No deal is better than a bad deal -- Sign the petition now.

Why is no deal better than a bad deal?

• The Bush tax cuts will expire anyway. That's right, the Bush tax cuts -- which are the single largest contributor to the deficit -- will end on December 31, even if Congress does nothing between now and then. That means taxes on the top 2% will go up and Republicans won't have any leverage to lower them again in the New Year.
   
• Cutting Social Security and Medicare won't fix the deficit. Social Security is paid for by the payroll tax, which goes into the Social Security Trust Fund. Cutting Social Security won't add money to the general fund. Meanwhile, the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office has said the Medicare cuts that Republicans are pushing would do little to affect long-term spending.

Tell Congress to stand their ground -- we won't accept cuts to vital programs like Medicare or any extension of the Bush tax cuts for the rich.

Republicans for Millionaire Rights ? You Bet`Cha !

Republicans, led by House Speaker John Boehner, want to scare Americans into accepting yet another extension of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% and deep cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. So they've created a "fiscal cliff" boogeyman.

Unfortunately, if you're following the media story, you may believe Republican claims that the world's about to end. But the only thing going off a cliff on December 31 is the ability of Republicans to hold our economy hostage for the sake of the rich (read below to find out why!).

That's why we have to spread the truth, so our friends and family don't fall for the Republican myth about the fiscal cliff. We've put together a 5-point guide on what this fiscal showdown is really all about. Check it out and then share it on Facebook or Twitter, or just forward this email.

5-Point Guide To The Fiscal Showdown

1. The "Fiscal Cliff" Is A Myth. As Paul Krugman put it, "The looming prospect of spending cuts and tax increases isn't a fiscal crisis. It is, instead, a political crisis brought on by the G.O.P.'s attempt to take the economy hostage."¹ Republicans are manufacturing this crisis to pressure Democrats to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy and accept painful cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
   
   
2. The Bush Tax Cuts Finally End December 31. If Congress does nothing, the ax will fall on all the Bush tax cuts on New Year's Eve.² Then, on January 1, the public pressure on John Boehner and House Republicans to extend the middle-class tax cuts (already passed by the Senate and waiting to be signed by President Obama) will become irresistible.³ So the middle-class tax cut will eventually get renewed, and we'll have $823 billion more revenue from the top 2% to do great things with.⁴
   
3. The Sequester. The sequester is another political creation, forced on Democrats by Republicans in exchange for lifting the debt ceiling last year to avoid crashing our economy.⁵ It's a set of cuts (50% to a bloated military budget and 50% to important domestic programs) designed to make both Republicans and Democrats hate it so much that they'd never let it happen.⁶ And the cuts can be reversed weeks or months into 2013 without causing damage.⁷
   
   
4. The Big Three. Nothing happens to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid benefits on January 1—unless Republicans force painful cuts to beneficiaries in exchange for tax increases on the wealthy, which are going to happen anyway if Congress does NOTHING.⁸ So, there's literally no reason benefits cuts should be part of the discussion right now.
   
5. We Should Be Talking About Jobs. The real crisis Americans want Congress to fix is getting people back to work. And with just a fraction of that $823 billion from the wealthiest 2%, we could create jobs for more than 20,000 veterans and pay for the 300,000 teachers and 52,000 first responders, which our communities so desperately need.⁹ That's not to mention jobs from investing in clean energy and our national infrastructure.

Please share this with your friends and family—and talk about it at the dinner table next week. The first step to winning this showdown is making sure we're all armed with the facts.

Today the President affirmed the message sent by the American people on Tuesday.  It is time for our country to come together around our shared belief that working families need more economic security—not less—and the wealthy simply need to pay their fair share.  No more Bush tax cuts for the richest 2 percent. No benefit cuts for Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. 

President Obama campaigned on a promise to move our country “Forward” and working people overwhelmingly supported his vision. “Forward is not more failed Bush tax handouts to the rich. “Forward” is bringing down health care costs, notcutting benefits working families deserve and depend on. “Forward” is notsimply maintaining the status quo. Forward is finding responsible ways to rebuild America, with more economic security, less inequality, shared prosperity and a ladder to the middle class for all.  Voters this week—including Romney voters—said they supported those goals.

As the President rightly said, “Our job now is to get a majority in Congress to reflect the will of the American people.”

DEMOCRATS COULD FAIL ? NOT Just Our Base ~The Country

Paul Krugman: Democrats Could Fail If They Betray Their Base

Paul Krugman warns that the ascent of the Democratic Party could be short-lived if they betray their base.

"The Democrats now look like the natural party of government," the Nobel Prize-winning economist wrote in a New York Times blog post on Sunday. "We're a diverse nation, ethnically and otherwise, in which a lot of liberal ideas have become perfectly mainstream."

But, he added, Democrats could waste this opportunity by caving to the Republican agenda in negotiations with Congress.

"This newly effective coalition could be shattered if taken for granted," Krugman wrote. "If, say, Obama raises the retirement age in return for vague promises on revenue (promises that would be betrayed at the first opportunity); if he appoints a deficit scold to a major economic post; it could all fall apart."

The fiscal cliff will be the first major post-election test of whether President Barack Obama will stand firm or cave. The fiscal cliff is a set of $1.2 trillion in spending cuts and tax hikes that are scheduled to take place on Jan. 1 if Congress does not agree on a plan to reduce the deficit. It is likely to cause a recession, according to economists.

Congressional Republicans are trying to reach a deficit reduction deal to avert the fiscal cliff with mostly spending cuts and little new tax revenue. Unlike Obama, they don't want to let the Bush tax cuts on income above $250,000 expire. Krugman wrote in a New York Times column on Friday that Obama should go over the fiscal cliff if necessary to get his way.

But Obama may already be giving in. He is proposing a deficit reduction deal that would cut $3 in spending for every $1 in new tax revenue. These spending cuts are likely to hit the poor, middle class, and elderly.

Congratulations everyone ! !

This country has truly changed, and I believe there will be no going back. Hate lost yesterday. That is amazing in and of itself. And all the women who were elected last night! A total rebuke of Neanderthal attitudes.

Now the real work begins. Millions of us -- the majority -- must come together to insist that President Obama and the Democrats stand up and fight for the things we sent them there to do. Mr. President, do not listen to the pundits who today call for you to "compromise." No. You already tried that. It didn't work. You can compromise later if you need to, but please, no more beginning by compromising. And if the Republican House doesn't want to play ball, do a massive end run around them with one executive order after another -- just like they have done and will do if given the chance again.

We have to have Obama's back. As he is blocked and attacked by the right, we need to be there with him. We are the majority. Let's act like it.

And please Mr. President, make the banks and Wall Street pay. You're the boss, not them. Lead the fight to get money out of politics -- the spending on this election is shameful and dangerous. Don't wait til 2014 to bring the troops home -- bring 'em home now. Stop the drone strikes on civilians. End the senseless war on drugs. Act like a pit bull when it comes to climate change -- ignore the nuts, and fix this now. Take the profit motive out of things that any civilized country would say, "this is for the common good." Make higher education affordable for everyone and don't send 22-year-olds out into the world already in massive debt. Order a moratorium on home foreclosures and evictions. Enact economic policy that will create good-paying jobs and spend the money that's needed to do that. Make your second term one for the history books.

Finally, thanks must be given to the Occupy movement who, a year ago, set the tone of this election year by getting everyone to talk about the 1 percent vs. 99 percent. It inspired Obama and his campaign to realize that there was a huge popular sentiment against what the wealthy have done to the country and there was something wrong if just 400 rich guys owned more than 160 million Americans combined (all those moochers and bums). This led to Romney's "47 percent" remarks and THAT was the beginning of the end of his campaign. Thank you Mother Jones forreleasing that secret tape, and thank you to the minimum wage worker who placed a camera on the serving buffet next to the candle. This morning's headline in the Washington Post says it all: "At Romney headquarters, the defeat of the 1 percent." Thank you Sandra Fluke for enduring the insults hurled at you and then becoming an important grass-roots leader against the war on women. Thank you Todd Akin for... well, for just being you. Thank you CEOs of Chrysler and GM for coming out forcefully against the Republican(!) candidate, saying he lived in "some parallel universe" when he lied about Jeep. Thank you Governor Christie for your new bromance with Obama. You know, you really didn't have to!

And you, Mother Nature, with all your horrific damage, death and destruction you caused last week, you became, ironically, the undoing of a Party that didn't believe in you or your climate changing powers.

Perhaps they'll believe now.

Once again, thanks to all of you who brought a nonvoter to the polls. In a last-minute effort to get Obama an extra million votes he wasn't counting on, I enjoyed talking and texting with your loved ones and friends yesterday who weren't going to vote -- but then changed their minds after a little nudge and some TLC ("Damn! Michael Moore? I'm getting in the car right now to go vote").

To my fellow Americans, I think you'll agree: it was nice to wake up this morning in the United States of America.

Keep it Moving

The election results are in. We made our decisions on candidates and issues. Now, we're ready to get to work, with all willing parties, to strengthen the economy, expand the Middle Class and move America forward.

That starts now.

The first item of business is making sure that we don’t roll back critical programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. As our Members of Congress head to Washington to wrap up business this month, let’s send a strong message that we need more economic security, not less. We don’t need any “grand bargain” that cuts our Social Security benefits, raises the retirement age for Social Security and Medicare and cuts Medicaid, a program that many of our loved ones rely upon. And, we certainly don’t need to cut these programs to pay for more tax breaks for the richest two percent of Americans. That’s NOT what Americans voted for yesterday!

A record number of women will represent their states in the new U.S. Senate, CNN projects.

Democrat Heidi Heitkamp will win the Senate race in North Dakota, CNN projects, making a total of 20 women in the 100-seat chamber come January. She will be part of the 53-seat Democrat majority, with 45 Republicans and two independents.

Elizabeth Warren will be the first woman senator to represent Massachusetts, and Mazie Hirono will be the first female U.S. senator from Hawaii and the first Asian-American woman in the Senate.

Other women who won Tuesday night were Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Tammy Baldwin, who will represent Wisconsin.

As we head into the final stretch of the election season, these are six overarching points to keep in mind. 

1. Working-class rejection of Bush-Romney-Ryan economics is the defining issue of this year.

A year ago, all the talk was that President Obama could never win with high unemployment. And even more to the point, the early conventional wisdom went further, writing off working-class voters, asserting that the only path available to Obama was upscale voters in states like North Carolina. Yet what we see is that middle-class families are not voting automatically on the basis of the current economic statistics. They are comparing alternative approaches—and rejecting the reverse Robin Hood, union-busting, extreme economic positions of the right.

This election may come down to cars. That’s right, cars. Nothing illustrates the choice between the two presidential candidates better than the 2009 rescue of the auto industry.  And, despite Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s efforts to distort the contrast with patently dishonest claims and a new TV ad, the auto rescue may turn out to be the deciding factor in the presidential election.
