United Steelworkers & Goodyear, Union City TN. Reach Tentative Agreement

Goodyear Union City Tennessee & United Steelworkers 878-L Reach Tentative Agreement...
By Don Jones...12/29/09

The Union City Tennessee Goodyear Plant and the United Steelworkers Local 878-L, in Union City Tennessee, reached a tentative agreement on December 18, 2009 ! This contract is a local agreement and is subject to membership ratification. As I understand it, there are no earth shattering changes in their present agreement. The Union City plant lost a total of(1.) (21) jobs. They are the janitorial and yard maintenance people. These jobs will be contracted out by Goodyear ! Although they lost these jobs, the people filling those jobs will NOT lose their job with Goodyear. They will be offered a buyout or another position in the plant. (2.)Those employees who wish to bid on another job inside the plant, will need to be on their present job for one (1) year ! Previously it was (6) six months. (3.)All employees plant wide will now be required to have direct deposit of their paychecks ! It seems that Goodyear is in the drivers seat ! You may not like this agreement ? However, don`t be mislead in to believing that Goodyear will not shut down this plant, THEY WILL ! Think of it as a bitter tasting pill, that will eventually make you well ! If you get well, You live to fight another day. Jobs are most difficult to find these days. Goodyear is building plants in China ! Before you vote no, better think of the consequences. I realize that some of you believe that Goodyear will close Union City, regardless of the situation, and that you are merely financing the closing. I no longer believe that ! Union Workers in the recent past, have had a hard row to hoe ! I now believe that things are changing, and in their/our favor ! Free democratic trade unions are/have taken a beating. It is still one of the best insurance policy`s available to workers ! Your Local 878-L negotiating team, it seems to this writer did an outstanding job, no more than they had to give up ! When you vote on this contract, do so with conviction and prayer. I think things are a changing and you will do better in the future ! Provided you are there. It is your decision.
2009 Tenative Agreement

Health Care at Last ! Democrats do It ! Now on to Jobs, Jobs, Jobs !

Health Care Passed by the Senate 60-39...along Party Lines !
by Don Jones...12/24/09

By now, I am sure you have heard that we have a health care bill passed in the senate by a vote of 60 votes for and 39 votes against. Senator Jim Bunning(R)Kentucky did not vote ? (58) votes were democrat, (2) votes were independents, (39) votes were republican ! After a long and hard fight, the American people have won one ! The republicans were united to the end. Our two Senators from Tennessee, Lamar Alexander(R)and Bob Corker(R), did not waiver, they once again voted against Health Care for Tennesseans. So sad ! So to all Tennesseans, I say congratulations and Merry Christmas, You gave yourself a great Christmas present called Health Care ! Make no mistake, you`ll pay for it, but, remember you pay for everything, including Alexander and Corker`s insurance ! Perhaps it is time to change Senators ! If you click on the title of this article or the link following it will carry you to
It will give you all of Tennessee's elected officials. Write them and tell them of your displeasure or pleasure in their votes ! In our District#8-Tennessee Congressional District, John Tanner is retiring. Yesterday, this writer endorsed State Senator Roy Herron of Dresden for this key position. Roy is a dedicated public official and a loving father and husband. I cannot say or praise him enough ! I urge you and yours to help aid and assist him in his campaign. Roy`s first issue of a statement in regard to his/our campaign was, JOBS, JOBS, JOBS. I agree completely ! Jobs, Jobs, Jobs ! A good start would be with the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Plant in Union City Tennessee.

Senator Franken(D) Minnesota~Tells Off Bob Corker(R)Tennessee~Hoo-Ray !

After Quiet first months, Franken's Sharp Tongue Emerges in Senate
By Alexander Bolton - 12/23/09

Al Franken, the Democrat from Minnesota who won election to the Senate after a successful career as a comic and author, has begun to show the sharp-tongued side of his personality by ripping into GOP staffers behind the scenes.Franken has worked diligently to keep a low public profile in Congress while focusing on wonky policy debates. But he has been unable to completely repress the fiery passion that made him a hero of the Democratic Party’s liberal base. Franken has teamed up with GOP colleagues to introduce a variety of legislation, something that may surprise fans who read his books, such as Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them: A Fair and Balanced Look at the Right. But he has also pummeled Republican senators and their aides, showing a glimpse of the pugilistic style of his best-seller, Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot and Other Observations. Franken has surprised some of his colleagues behind the scenes by getting into heated tangles with GOP staffers. One such exchange took place in Franken’s office during a recent meeting with Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) and his aides.Franken invited Corker to his office to discuss an op-ed that Corker penned in a Tennessee newspaper opposing an amendment Franken offered to a defense bill. The measure gave the employees of defense contractors who suffer rape or sexual assault at the workplace the right to sue in court. The meeting quickly deteriorated when Franken began berating one of Corker’s aides, according to GOP aides familiar with the incident. Franken’s sally was so harsh that Corker told Franken to lay off his aide and direct the comments at him instead.Franken’s tough approach came as a surprise because Corker scheduled the meeting to mend fences after Franken confronted him about the op-ed during an angry exchange on the Senate floor. Another GOP staffer, an aide to a Senate Republican leader, found herself at the sharp end of Franken’s wit at a recent reception in the Senate’s Mansfield Room. The tongue-lashing took place at an event to celebrate the swearing-in of GOP Sen. George LeMieux (Fla.).After the conversation began ordinarily, Franken started to grill the aide about what he sees as the failings of the GOP. Franken demanded to know why it had become the "Party of No" and had exaggerated facts in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq, according to another GOP leadership aide. A spokeswoman for Franken declined to comment on either exchange. The aide emphasized Franken's accomplishments during his short time in the Senate. "Sen. Franken is always looking for ways to work with his colleagues to make people's lives better and get things done for Minnesota," said spokeswoman Casey Aden-Wansbury. "He has built good working relationships with colleagues on both sides of the aisle — half the bills he has introduced have Republican co-sponsors. Sen. Franken is pleased that two of his bills have already been signed into law — and that both passed with bipartisan support," she said. The incidents with GOP staff have reminded some Senate observers of a mocking interaction Franken had with a conservative student, Peter Fritz, at Carleton College during his Senate campaign. After learning of Fritz’s political orientation, Franken pressed him to defend Reaganomics and mimicked his speech patterns.“There is a war within Al Franken,” said Lawrence Jacobs, a professor of political science at the University of Minnesota. “The Al Franken head tells him to steer away from the limelight and build his reputation. Then there is his heart, which is quite fiery."Jacobs said Franken must be careful not to engage in too many political brawls, or it could “reinforce for independent voters what they feared about him, that he’s a hot-headed partisan.”Franken has not just confronted GOP aides at private meetings; he has also mixed it up with Republican colleagues in public on the Senate floor. In addition to chewing out Corker over the op-ed, earlier this month Franken clashed loudly with Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.) on the Senate floor. The dust-up was spurred by Thune’s claim that Democratic healthcare legislation would impose new taxes immediately but fail to implement benefits for several years. Franken derided Thune’s floor presentation and implied that he had fabricated some of his facts, a more personal confrontation than usual in the clubby Senate. An irate Thune walked off the Senate floor after Franken revealed a private conversation they had on the topic.“I asked if he mentioned any of the benefits that do kick in [immediately] and he said, ‘Uh no,’ ” Franken said in front of C-SPAN television cameras. “We are entitled to our own opinions; we’re not entitled to our own facts,” Franken said, raising his voice. “Benefits kick in right away, and if you’re going to hold up a chart that says when taxes kick in and when benefits kick in … you better include the benefits that do kick in right away.”Franken later apologized to Thune.
And last week, Franken cut off Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) during his speech on the Senate floor. Lieberman, who has drawn the ire of liberals over his opposition to the public health insurance option, asked for an additional moment to finish remarks about amendments he planned to offer, but Franken, who was presiding over the Senate, refused to grant the routine request."In my capacity as the senator from Minnesota, I object," Franken said."Really ?" replied Lieberman.
A spokeswoman for Franken said that the senator was just trying to move along with the legislation, but at a press conference late last week, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) expressed disgust with Franken, saying that Lieberman's request for more time to extend his remarks was "objected to by the newest member of the United States Senate in a most brusque way ... We've got to stop this kind of behavior. I have never seen anything like that and I hope that I don't see it again."These incidents have pulled Franken away from his stated goal of modeling his early career in the Senate on former Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), who made a point of proving herself as a “workhorse,” in Senate parlance, and who teamed up often with Republicans.
Franken’s sharp-elbowed exchanges have come in moments of passion. By all appearances, he has worked to keep partisan outbursts to a minimum, knowing that what may draw listeners to Air America does not play well in the buttoned-down Senate. He has stayed off national cable shows such as "Countdown with Keith Olbermann" and "The Rachel Maddow Show" to avoid appearing as a celebrity liberal spokesman instead of a hard-working senator from Minnesota.Franken stayed away from the popular liberal blog Daily Kos until this past weekend, when he submitted a measured defense of his decision to vote for Senate healthcare reform legislation.Franken, who has shared a lot of his time with Minnesota media outlets, has kept the national press at arm’s length. He participated in his first national conference call over the weekend. The call with colleagues did not, however, push political hot buttons. Instead, it focused on consumer protections in the healthcare bill. And he has wooed a significant number of Republican colleagues to cooperate on legislative initiatives. For example, he introduced the Service Dogs for Veterans Act with Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.); a diabetes prevention amendment with Sen. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.); a bill to assist the victims of sexual assault with Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Orrin Hatch (R-Utah); and the Compassionate Care for Servicewomen Act with Sen. Olympia Snowe (R-Maine). But even while Franken has tried to focus on sober policy issues, he has at times become embroiled in heated political debates inadvertently, his defenders say. This happened with the so-called “anti-rape” amendment Franken offered to a defense bill. The measure barred the government from doing business with contractors that required employees to settle rape and sexual assault charges through arbitration instead of the courts. The amendment was popular enough to attract 68 votes in the Senate, but it quickly became a political football when liberals used it to attack 30 Republican lawmakers who opposed it. Liberal comic Jon Stewart slammed Republican opponents on his talk show, and other critics set up a fake website, Republicans ForRape.org, something that did not endear Franken to some of his conservative colleagues.“It’s partly because Franken’s on a 24/7 watch,” said Jacobs of the University of Minnesota. “Even when he’s not intending to go public, he’s finding himself in the media spotlight.”

Editorial : Corker (R) Tennessee, needed to be told off ! This Tennessean says, Thanks Senator Franken.

Working Harder For Less ! You Bet`cha !

Working More, Getting Paid Less ?
by Tula Connell, Dec 21, 2009

Productivity rose 8.1 percent in the third quarter, the largest gain since 2003, as employers pile more on their staff. Meanwhile, pay is stagnating and worker stress increasing because of the larger workloads and the constant fear of being thrown out of a job to join the more than 15 million workers officially unemployed. A Los Angeles Times story points to how rising productivity, while good for the economy, is not benefiting America’s workers. According to Thomas A. Kochan, a professor of management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, productivity gains are troubling because so far, they haven’t been accompanied by wage increases….The threat of outsourcing has also made employees more reluctant to press for higher wages, he said, when they know that if they push too hard, their jobs could disappear. The result? Anxiety is rippling across the workplace. A survey by Career Builder released last month indicated that a quarter of employers rated their employees’ morale as low. Nearly half of employees said their workload had increased in the last six months, and 40% said their stress level at work was high. About one in five workers surveyed were dissatisfied with their work-life balance. Read the full article here.

Alexander & Corker Vote Against Tennesseans !

Tell Alexander & Corker(R`s) Tennessee...You are Very Disappointed !

Early Monday morning, the Senate voted to move forward with meaningful health reform that would help millions of older Americans.
And while 60 senators voted YES, 40 tried to block progress and voted NO.
Click here to see how YOUR senators voted and let them know how you feel about their decision! Monday's vote was a big step forward for reform that will lower drug costs, provide relief from insurance companies that discriminate based on age or health, and strengthen our system of long-term services and support.
But the Senate will have a few more crucial votes before health reform is finished. That's why your feedback right now is so critical. Your senators need to know that their constituents are engaged – it will make them that much more responsive when we need their help again! If one or both your senators voted NO – then they voted to delay reform and prevent progress on helping Americans suffering under a broken health care system. However your senators voted, they need to hear from you about this crucial decision.
Please take a few seconds to check how your senators voted and send them a note to register your thanks OR disappointment.

Editorial : Alexander & Corker both voted against Tennesseans on health-care reform !, they won`t care...but tell them how disappointed you are in their utter contempt for Tennesseans !

I Get Letter`s ~ President Barack Obama !

~ Health Care Reform ~

By President Barack Obama

Don,

Early this morning, the Senate made history and health reform cleared its most important hurdle yet -- garnering the 60 votes needed to move toward a final vote in that chamber later this week. This marks the first time in our nation's history that comprehensive health reform has come to this point. And it appears that the American people will soon realize the genuine reform that offers security to those who have health insurance and affordable options to those who do not.I'm grateful to Senator Harry Reid and every senator who's been working around the clock to make this happen. And I'm grateful to you, and every member of the Organizing for America community, for all the work you have done to make this progress possible. After a nearly century-long struggle, we are now on the cusp of making health insurance reform a reality in the United States of America. As with any legislation, compromise is part of the process. But I'm pleased that recently added provisions have made this landmark bill even stronger. Between the time when the bill passes and the time when the insurance exchanges get up and running, insurance companies that try to jack up their rates do so at their own peril. Those who hike their prices may be barred from selling plans on the exchanges. And while insurance companies will be prevented from denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing conditions once the exchanges are open, in the meantime there will be a high-risk pool where people with pre-existing conditions can purchase affordable coverage.A recent amendment has made these protections even stronger. Insurance companies will now be prohibited from denying coverage to children immediately after this bill passes. There's also explicit language in this bill that will protect a patient's choice of doctor. And small businesses will get additional assistance as well. These protections are in addition to the ones we've been talking about for some time. No longer will insurance companies be able to drop your coverage if you become sick and no longer will you have to pay unlimited amounts out of your own pocket for treatments that you need.Under this bill families will save on their premiums; businesses that would see their costs rise if we don't act will save money now and in the future. This bill will strengthen Medicare and extend the life of the program. Because it's paid for and gets rid of waste and inefficiency in our health care system, this will be the largest deficit reduction plan in over a decade. Finally, this reform will extend coverage to more than 30 million Americans who don't have it.These are not small changes. These are big changes. They're fundamental reforms. They will save money. They will save lives, And your passion, your work, your organizing helped make all of this possible. Now it's time to finish the job.

Thank you,

President Barack Obama

Senate Advances Health Care Bill ?

Senate Pass`s Health Care Bill...
Senator Menendez

Early this morning, Democratic senators stood together to advance the most sweeping health care reform in generations. This historic bill will mean 30 million fewer uninsured Americans. Health care for every child. Tighter insurance regulations. It's a huge step in the right direction. While every Democrat voted for the bill, every Republican stood opposed. The GOP now is taking the fierce fight it waged on health reform to each of our Senate races. We must win every last election to keep our majority. Without that majority, we won't be able to build upon this historic legislation.I've heard it said that the true test of any reform is whether or not it makes lives better. This bill does that, and your passion and persistence helped make it happen. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Sen. Bob Menendez

Sec/Treas. Liz Shuler & Vice-President Joe Biden ~ Middle Class Allowed back in White House !

Shuler to White House: Let’s Revive Manufacturing
by
Seth Michaels, Dec 17, 2009

AFL-CIO Secretary-Treasurer Liz Shuler joined Vice President Joe Biden and other leaders at yesterday’s meeting of the White House Middle Class Task Force. The topic: restoring our crippled manufacturing sector. The White House Middle Class Task Force yesterday issued a framework detailing the challenges facing manufacturing, and Shuler delivered a message to the White House that fixing manufacturing must be a priority in building a stronger economy. Speaking to administration officials as part of a panel with other business and labor leaders, Shuler emphasized the need for government to step up and create policies to encourage manufacturing. In short: We can’t sustain a strong economy based on debt, imports and financial maneuvering. Shuler praised White House proposals on job training, aid to displaced workers, infrastructure investment and ending the tax incentives that lead corporations to ship jobs overseas. She made the point that the nation needs a strong re-commitment to leveling the playing field for America’s manufacturing industry by enforcing its trade agreements, providing access to credit for small and medium-sized businesses through unused bank bailout funds and stopping the unfair practice of currency manipulation.
One of the ways we can really spur the economy and create jobs, Shuler said, is by making sure manufacturing is part of any policy agenda. Throughout discussions on creating good jobs, Shuler said, we must focus our efforts on young workers, to ensure they have access to sustainable jobs in the manufacturing sector.
Creating good paying, family sustaining manufacturing jobs is at the heart of rebuilding our economy, Shuler said. But, this alone is not enough; we must
reform the health care system to lower employer costs and make our nation’s manufacturers more globally competitive and pass the Employee Free Choice Act to empower workers on the job, allowing them to bargain for fair wages and access to the training and development opportunities a union can provide.
The AFL-CIO has proposed a
five-point plan to create a short-term solution to the job crunch and get our economy moving again.

Senator Lamar Alexander(R)Tennessee ~ Wrong~Wrong~Wrong !

Senator Alexander(R)Tennessee - Opposes Health-Care Reform !

I received the following letter from Senator Lamar Alexander(R)Tennessee...The Republicans have pulled out all stops to kill health-care...It is time we got rid of Senator Alexander !

I thought you might want to know that I will be on CBS’s “Face the Nation” this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. EST (9:30 a.m. CST) to talk about the Democratic health care bill being rushed through the Senate. The Democratic majority seems determined to pursue a political kamikaze mission towards a historic mistake with this health care bill. From what we know about it – which very few senators have been allowed to see – the bill will raise taxes, hike insurance premiums and increase government spending. On Sunday morning, I look forward to what I hope will be a good discussion about why we need to stop this bill, start over and move step-by-step toward reforms that will lower – not raise – health care costs to Americans and our government.

Thank you,

Lamar Alexander(R)Tennessee

Editorial : Please do not be fooled by Senator Alexander, he just wants to kill the bill, not start over ! You can contact him on his web-site > > > http://www.alexander.senate.gov/public/ or click on the title of this article ! Tell Senator Alexander, you just want what we/tax-payer`s, purchase him, the best Health insurance our tax dollars can buy.

Tennessee Seniors ~ Hey That`s Me ! Health Care Reform ?

A Letter From AARP : Senior Citizens Tennessee

Seniors in Tennessee can't afford to wait any longer – every day the Senate delays health reform, thousands of Americans lose their coverage.

Just this week Senate leaders made a commitment to close the Medicare Part D coverage gap – the "doughnut hole" – in the health reform legislation. This is a major step in the right direction and wouldn't have happened without your help!
Now the Senate must vote to move the health reform one step closer to reality. Thousands of Americans who are losing their coverage daily can't afford to wait any longer. But our window of opportunity to make a difference before this big vote is closing fast!

Thanks for your help. I'll be in touch to let you know how the vote went and, I hope, when we can expect the Senate to cast its vote on the final bill next week.
Thanks for all your help.
Sincerely,
Barry Jackson,

Senior Manager, Grassroots AARP

Editorial : Remember our Two Republican Senators from Tennessee, Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker are opposed to health-care reform. Thus they are opposed to Senior/middle Class Tennesseans ! Just click on the appropriate places on this blog, or the title and let them know, where and how you feel. I have already done so, and told them to vote for Health-Care reform, thus voting for Tennesseans ! After all, we just want what we buy them.

President Leo W. Gerard, USWA on The State of Health-Care !

Leo Gerard on Health Reform Debate: "I'm angry as hell"!
Gerard Vows Union Will Not Campaign for Lawmakers Who Vote Against Real Reform

Dec. 16, 2009 -- USW International President Leo W. Gerard appeared on MSNBC's Ed Schultz Show last night to discuss health insurance reform, expressing the frustration he and many working families are feeling about the direction of the debate, particularly in the Senate, where a handful of lawmakers are trying to block meaningful reform. Click on the image or click here to watch the clip.
"I can tell you this point blank: if we don't get a meaningful health care bill that reduces costs and has everybody in and doesn't have an excise tax, have a pay or play for employers, have a public option or Medicare buy-in, we're not going to campaign for any Democrat who voted against this, and we're going to try to defeat them," Gerard said. The leader of the union that represents 1.2 million active and retired members said the union's activists would continue to push for the
House version of health insurance reform, which excludes a devastating excise tax on workers' benefits and includes a public option that would ensure coverage for millions of Americans. "We need to fight for what's right for the country and by fighting for what's right for the country, we'll do what's right for people," Gerard said. "I'm angry as hell." Click here to visit the USW health insurance reform tool kit for more information about this important issue, including how you can contact your members of Congress and the Senate to urge them to support our principles for real reform. More About the Excise Tax, The Senate bill slaps an enormous 40 percent excise tax starting in 2014 on plans valued at more than $8,500 for individual coverage and $23,000 for family coverage (with some adjustments). They say it will only impact the so-called "Cadillac Plans". Some Steelworker plans would fall into this category -- hard-fought benefits that were negotiated, often at the expense of wage increases or other improvements.
The excise tax will be passed onto employees in the form of lower benefits or higher premiums. The Senate bill would phase in the tax for workers in high-cost states, in industries with older workers and in more dangerous jobs. But we worry it could still discriminate against these workers, despite the bump in the threshold to $9,850 for an individual and $26,000 for a family that Senator Reid added for these groups. These workers are disproportionately penalized because they have to pay more for the same basic health care we all expect out of a decent plan. Please
click here to find and contact your Senators and Representatives about this important issue.

Editorial : Dear Mr. President Leo W. Gerard USWA, I could`nt have said it better. I pledge to help aid and assist you in defeating any politician, who votes against these very American principles ! Joe Lieberman is a perfect example of Senators taking care of themselves ! Joe and Senator`s like him must go ! Are you reading, Lamar and Bob ?

Hey Senior`s ~ Listen Up ! Hey That`s Me !

Barbara Easterling to Seniors: You Continually Amaze Me

Alliance for Retired Americans President Barbara Easterling looks at the fight for health care reform and other battles union retirees fought in 2009 and tells Alliance members: “You continually amaze me.” As 2009 draws to a close, I want to say thanks for all you did this year to educate and mobilize your fellow union retirees on state and national issues. No matter how long the day, or how tough the fight, you consistently rose to the challenge. It was an honor and a privilege to become president of the Alliance for Retired Americans earlier this year. For me, the Alliance is a constant reminder of how people can accomplish great things when brought together around a common goal. We’ve sure had our hands full this year with health care. I know this has been difficult. Seniors have been hit with a whirlwind of lies and scare tactics from insurance companies and political opportunists. Too often the truth gets lost in all this sound and fury—seniors actually have much to gain from health care reform. Because of your great work in 2009, we have a chance to pass a law that will help Americans of all ages better afford to see a doctor or get a prescription filled. As I write this, we are nearing the finish line. But in this marathon health care debate, the last mile may be the hardest. We cannot stop now. In 2010, we will need to finish health care reform, keep a watchful eye out for those who want to “reform” Social Security, and get ready for next fall’s elections. Older voters will make up more than one-third of the turnout in many states, so it will be more important than ever to educate our fellow retirees on the issues and where the candidates stand. Again, thank you for all you do. Union retirees continually amaze me. You bring such experience, energy and passion to your work. You are making a difference.
Best wishes for happy and healthy holidays.
Editorial : If we allow our Senators to screw this up, we should be ashamed of ourselves. Senator`s Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker (R`s) Tennessee are opposed to health care reform. If they vote against us, we need to cut out their Health-Care insurance, that you and I provide them at no cost to them !

Hughy ~ Dewey & Louie...= McConnell-Alexander-Thune (R`s)...The Three McDuck`s !

Senators McConnell - Alexander & Thune (R`s)
Democratic Health Care Bill is Same Turkey You Didn’t Like in August
The following speech was made on Senate floor by Senator Alexander(R)Tennessee
A few days before Thanksgiving, I noted that Senator Reid’s bill was appropriate for the season: it’s the same turkey you didn’t like in August, and it wasn’t going to taste any better on Thanksgiving. Not much has changed since August. The bill still means higher premiums, it still means higher taxes, and it still cuts Medicare. It’s still 2,000 pages, and it still costs more than $2 trillion when fully implemented — and that doesn’t take into account a quarter-trillion-dollar doctors’ Medicare reimbursement. And it still sends struggling states new Medicaid costs that will force states to raise taxes or damage higher education or both. Click here to see my speech on the Senate floor or here to read more.

Editorial : I hope you enjoy this, I`m still "roflmaon" You can tell they are, shall we say, embellishing the truth ! Their lips are moving. Being from Tennessee, I`m ashamed of Senator Alexander, he has overstayed his usefulness. He is like Joe Lieberman, he`s taking care of Alexander, not Tennesseans ! Thought you might need a laugh or two ? In all seriousness, this is a crying shame ! Trust me, I did`nt vote for Alexander ! Dear Senator Alexander, may I suggest you try to keep better company than those two !

It`s All a Part of Health-Care !

The U.S. Senate may vote as soon as Monday, December 14 to allow the safe reimportation of drugs from other industrialized countries. Senators Byron Dorgan (D-ND) and Olympia Snowe (R-ME) have introduced an amendment to the Senate health care legislation to allow safe drug reimportation. Americans pay the highest prescription drug prices in the world, five times more to fill their prescriptions than consumers in other countries such as Canada. Retirees and older Americans are particularly hard hit by high drug costs because they have more acute and chronic illnesses. In addition to consumer savings, the Congressional Budget Office estimates that the Dorgan-Snowe Amendment would also save the government about $19 billion over 10 years. This is a win for retirees and all taxpayers. For several years, the Alliance sponsored bus trips to Canada for seniors who are forced to make the trips to purchase prescriptions that costs hundreds of dollars less than in the United States. However, bus trips are not a solution. The Dorgan-Snowe amendment, with rigid safeguards to ensure quality control, is a necessary measure to reduce ever-increasing prescription drug costs. Please click below to send an email to your U. S. Senators today and urge them to vote for the Dorgan-Snowe drug reimportation amendment.

Jobs, Jobs, Jobs ~ Manufacturing Base !

Reminder: Last Day !

On Monday, Rapid Response sent out an important survey to get your input on how to create jobs in our country. If you haven’t yet done the survey, take five minutes to do so TODAY! The President is considering various approaches for needed job creation, including the strategies the USW is fighting for. He is now asking us to weigh in to tell him what we believe should be the most important priorities and tactics to make this happen. Responses will be compiled on Friday, so we need everyone who has not taken the survey to do so right now !

The Gift of Life ~ How Inspiring...

Yes, it is so great that we are all still here to enjoy and Celebrate life this Holiday Season.

By James Gleason

My wife just came back from a transplant nurses meeting (about 80 attending) and shared that my own 15 years (and I note and celebrate those others who responded to Adam with heart transplant years of 15 and 27 years out - YES!!!) is remarkable given what she heard in that presentation. Their topic was "Optimizing Immunosuppressive Management Strategies in the Transplant Patient and in retrospect they are still learning so much about our long history of over dosing/underdosing that it is truly amazing that we have the very positive results we have, and it should be getting better with each passing year as they learn more from observing those of us who are the long term survivors (hearts I'm talking about here, since the kidneys certainly have the longer history of those many years survival). I have observed over these years that transplant doesn't' prevent death, its an extension of the uncertain life span we all must face, transplant or not. So I have decided that the real question we all face is not how long we are going to live, but rather, what are we going to do with the life we have today, and tomorrow and if gifted with yet more, those days too.
So given this wonderful network we share here, what is everyone doing these days with that gift of life? Any special things you can share from this past year, for example, that were really special because you had that year to live because of the gift from a donor family who faced the other side of this uncertain length of life years/days? What are you celebrating this holiday season and how are you going to celebrate it because you can with this transplant ? Yes, Adam, we are (most of us anyway) still here, and thankfully very busy living life. Thanks for asking so we could share in responding to you this way. Happy and healthy holidays everyone (i.e., Russ, Karen, etc.). "Live long and prosper..." as they said on that famous Star Trek show years ago.

Just Say No to ~ Joe Lieberman

Say NO to Joe...

Senator Joe Lieberman is about to kill the public health insurance option. He has drawn a line in the sand - unlike any other Senator - and he's ready to kill health care reform if it includes a public option. To placate his outrageous demands, Senate Democrats have come up with this idea: Allowing insurance companies to operate nationally instead of at the state level. Here's what an insurance industry insider said about this so-called compromise yesterday: "We WIN. Administered by private insurance companies. No government funding. No government insurance competitor."1This proposal is not acceptable. It wouldn't control costs and it wouldn't increase competition in the health insurance industry.2Health reform must not be held hostage by Lieberman. We must stand up together and stop him right now. By the end of today, it might be too late. We must say with one voice: SAY NO TO JOE!We've put together a petition that we're going to deliver to the Senators negotiating as we speak. Click here to have your name automatically added to the petition telling them to say no to this deal.As Senator Brown said, "A large number of people in this country including many, many doctors wanted Medicare for all. That didn't happen. Then we wanted a strong public option tied to Medicare rates. Then we wanted a public option building the Medicare network. That didn't happen. Now we are saying public option coming out of the HELP Committee. And now we're saying public option with the state opt-out. Where was the compromise coming from their side?"3As we speak, ten Democratic Senators - five progressives and five conservatives - are locked in a room fighting out their differences on the Senate health reform bill. Everyone in that room needs to know that the American people reject Joe Lieberman's outrageous ideas.Click here to have your name automatically added to the petition rejecting this so-called compromise. The petition reads: SAY NO TO JOE ! A public health insurance option that is accountable to voters and Congress and available nationally from day one is essential to lower health care costs and to keeping insurance companies honest. Otherwise, the insurance companies win. Health reform cannot be held hostage by Joe Lieberman. We, the American people, reject this so-called compromise. Click here and we'll automatically add your name. We're planning on delivering these signatures today, so act now!
